Opportunity type: paid writing fellowship

No Depression is an independent, non-profit music and culture publication that is launching a $40,000 fellowship ($20K across two Reporting Fellows).

Two journalists will be selected from a public pitch process to write a 40,000-word story each, published in installations on nodepression.org to its members, which explores the intersection of how roots music influences and inspires modern culture.

This framework is modeled off of their first No Depression Writing Fellow, Sarah Smarsh, who was commissioned to write about how Dolly Parton influenced working class women. The work was then published in four installations in No Depression's print journals in 2017.

Smarsh went on to publish this work in her now acclaimed book, She Come By It Natural.
