A Very Greek-Forward Dispatch

Writing this newsletter is typically my favorite task of the week. The inspiration comes easily, and I'm genuinely excited to share what's happening inside Going Places and in the world with you.

That's not been the case recently, and I'm taking this as a sign that, like any other human, I need a break. 😊

The last time I had a real, proper vacation was in 2018 when I traveled to the Greek islands of Milos, Sifnos, and Folegandros in the Aegean Sea.

The 70+ trips I've taken since then were all for work, and even when I have a moment of quiet, I'm typically working (the hidden catch of the 'free-lance' life).

That's one of the reasons I'm excited to be moving to Greece later this year (more on this below and in future posts):

The all-consuming approach to work in the U.S. is just not appealing to me anymore.

So that's why this newsletter will be taking a break in the next two weeks. We will return in your inbox on Monday, August 17.

The origins of this summer's epic

Christopher Nolan's much-hyped blockbuster, The Odyssey, has now firmly rooted itself in the culture (as indicated by all the memes).

In my latest story for Condé Nast Traveler, I'm turning the attention around the film back to the region where it all started: the westernmost Greek Peloponnese Peninsula.

I traveled to the Peloponnese this spring and, as cliché as it sounds, fell in love with its remote, formidable landscapes, its three seas, and its people.

It’s like Crete 20 years ago.

“It’s like Crete 20 years ago,” someone told me in the Peloponnese, and I felt that.

Only 3 in every 100 travelers reach this peninsula, even though it’s just a few hours by car from Athens.

The movie is being talked about everywhere right now, but beyond our eternal fascination with Hollywood celebrities and myths of "great men," less is being said about the real people behind this place, this story, this real-world odyssey of a peninsula that is slowly opening up to the world.

I’m so glad I was able to add to this conversation.

This is also personal for me.

While in the Peloponnese, I decided to finally pull the trigger on a decision that has been years in the making, and this Fall, I am moving to … Greece.

(I'll say more on this in future posts.)

While Crete is where I’ll head next, I now also consider the Peloponnese a place very dear to my heart.
