In our first episode of the season, we're speaking with Tasneem Alsultan, a renowned Saudi-American photographer known for her work on gender and social issues in Saudi Arabia and the region.

Tasneem Alsultan is the first Arab woman to become a Canon ambassador.

She has primarily worked with The New York Times and National Geographic, but she has largely stopped collaborating with Western media outlets that continue to dehumanize Palestinian people in their coverage, headlines, and framing.

"I will forever refuse to take an assignment with the New York Times because I see how the Western publications go around in these hoops to not use the words that are so obvious to everyone. And if they're biased, that means they're racist, that they don't see us as humans." – Tasneem Alsultan

Saudi Tales of Love

Tasneem's documentary project offers intimate glimpses into the lives of Saudi women

Do we need marriage to signify that we have love? Do you need a husband to have a significant life?

These are some of the questions Tasneem set out to answer in her documentary project, Saudi Tales of Love, that breaks stereotypes about women in Saudi Arabia with intimate portraits of women doing epic things like diving and riding horses or enjoying smaller moments like gossiping and shopping.

"Disrupting the silence is the least we can do; to talk about it, to post about it, to feel angry and upset about it is the least thing we can do. Because if that came around for me, I hope that someone would be outraged somewhere across the world." – Tasneem Alsultan
